At IIT-Mandi’s 16th Foundation Day, Rajnath Singh highlights role of technology in national security


Mandi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Mandi is celebrating its 16th Foundation Day on Monday (February 24, 2025), marking over a decade of excellence in research, innovation and world-class technical education.


Defence Minister Rajnath Singh graced the occasion as the chief guest, emphasising the importance of technological advancements in national security and development. He arrived in Mandi on Monday morning to participate in the celebrations.


Addressing the gathering, the Defence Minister highlighted that IIT-Mandi’s vision was to become a leader in science and technology, contributing significantly to India’s progress.

He particularly underscored the growing impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and stated that continuous efforts were being made to understand and harness its potential.

India advancing in quantum computing, defence technology

Rajnath Singh also spoke about the future of quantum computing, noting that India was making remarkable strides in this field.


He emphasised that India was now among the select nations that possess multiple aircraft carriers and revealed that soon, India would also manufacture aircraft engines domestically, marking a major milestone in the country’s defence capabilities.

Honouring excellence in academia, research

As part of the Foundation Day Awards, IIT-Mandi will recognise outstanding contributions from students, faculty members, alumni and staff across various categories.

The awards include Young Faculty Fellow Award, Young Achiever Award (Faculty/Alumni), Student Academic Excellence Award and Student Tech Award. There were several other awards honouring excellence in research, sports and professional achievements

Established in 2009, IIT-Mandi has rapidly evolved into a hub of cutting-edge research and technological advancement, driven by its motto of “Scaling the Heights”.


The institute continues to play a crucial role in shaping India’s scientific and technological future, making significant contributions to various fields.
