SHIMLA: Amid the upcoming Assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi is arriving in Shimla on Tuesday to stay in Chharabra at the house of her daughter Priyanka Gandhi.
According to sources, Sonia will travel from Delhi to Chandigarh by flight and then continue to Chharabra by road, where her daughter Priyanka, an AICC general secretary, has been staying since Sunday.
Priyanka’s house is located near the Kalyani helipad in Chharabra, about 13 km from Shimla. Priyanka frequently visits the home and was last here during the Lok Sabha election campaign, where she stayed for five days and led the charge for Congress in both the parliamentary and Assembly byelections in Himachal Pradesh. This time, the visit is described as private, with no public programmes scheduled for either leader.

Chief Minister Sukhu may pay visit
Although the visit is reportedly non-political in nature, there is speculation that Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu may meet the Gandhis during their stay. While no formal meetings have been announced, the courtesy visit could happen, given the timing of the visit amidst crucial electoral preparations in neighbouring states. Both leaders are expected to remain in Chharabra for the next four-five days.
Political observations from the hills
Despite being a private visit, it is anticipated that Sonia and Priyanka will be closely monitoring the political developments from their hill residence, particularly in light of the Assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir.
Priyanka’s regular visits to Chharabra make the location a significant retreat where key political strategies are often discussed. Both mother and daughter are known to use their time in Himachal to reflect on national politics and campaign strategies.
