Omar Abdullah thanks PM for including him in campaign

CM Abdullah expressed his gratitude to PM Modi for involving him in this health initiative. Taking the campaign forward, he nominated 10 more individuals to join the fight against obesity.

Actor R Madhavan also thanked the Prime Minister and announced his nominations to further the cause.
During his Mann Ki Baat radio address on February 23, PM Modi emphasised the importance of reducing oil intake and tackling obesity, calling it not just a personal choice but a responsibility towards family and society.

“During the opening of the National Games in Dehradun, I raised a very important topic, which has started a new discussion in the country – obesity. To become a fit and healthy nation, we will certainly have to deal with this problem,” he stated.

Citing research, Modi highlighted that one in eight persons globally is living with obesity. He further warned that cases have doubled in recent years, with childhood obesity growing fourfold.

Nationwide movement for health, fitness

With the involvement of industrialists, politicians, sportspersons, and celebrities, the initiative is expected to gain traction across the country.

The campaign aims to encourage people to reduce their edible oil intake by 10% and pass on the challenge to 10 others, ensuring widespread participation in the mission for a healthier India.

To engage citizens, the government has also launched a dedicated online portal where participants can log their progress and share their success stories.

Schools and workplaces will be encouraged to hold awareness sessions and food companies will be urged to introduce healthier product alternatives.

Obesity a growing concern in India

Health experts have welcomed the initiative, stressing that obesity is an emerging crisis in India. Studies show that nearly 40% of urban Indians are either overweight or obese, leading to an increased risk of lifestyle diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disorders.

Nutritionists have also pointed out that high consumption of processed foods and excessive oil intake are key contributors to the problem. They recommend adopting a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while cutting down on trans fats and sugary beverages.
