In a shocking medical case from Ghumarwin town in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh, doctors at a private hospital successfully removed 33 coins, worth Rs 300, from the stomach of a 33-year-old man.
The coins, which weighed 247 grams, were discovered after the man was admitted with severe abdominal pain. According to medical staff, the patient was brought to the hospital by his family on January 31 due to persistent stomach issues.
Coins first discovered through endoscopy
Following a series of tests, including an endoscopy, doctors were stunned to find numerous coins lodged in his stomach. The surgical team, led by Dr Ankush, performed a complex three-hour operation to extract the coins, which included denominations of Re 1, Rs 2, Rs 10 and even a Rs 20 coin.
“It was a challenging case. The patient’s stomach was swollen like a balloon, and the coins were scattered everywhere. Using CR imaging, we located and carefully removed them,” said Dr Ankush.
The surgery involved both traditional and laparoscopic techniques to ensure the safe removal of the foreign objects.
Man suffering from schizophrenia
Doctors later revealed that the man suffers from schizophrenia, a mental health disorder characterised by distorted thinking and perception. This condition often leads to unusual behaviour, including the ingestion of non-food items.
The patient, a resident of Ghumarwin, is now in stable condition and under psychiatric care. Schizophrenia, also known as psychosis, affects an individual’s ability to distinguish reality from delusions.
Symptoms can vary depending on the stage of the illness but often include hallucinations, paranoia and disorganised thinking.
