Rajiv Gandhi Government College (Kotshera), Chaura Maidan, Shimla, successfully conducted a tree plantation drive under the aegis of the Disaster Management Cell. This initiative was organised in collaboration with the Forest Department of Himachal Pradesh, with the objective of sensitizing students about the importance of tree plantation in river catchment areas.

The program was coordinated under the guidance of Dr. Vibha Saraswati, Convenor of the Disaster Management Committee, along with members Dr. Kanika Lakhanpal and Dr. Dhanisha Negi.

They informed that the plantation drive took place in the Glen area of Shimla, which falls under the catchment zone of the Ashwani Khad, a tributary that ultimately merges into the Sutlej River.Keeping such catchment areas green and healthy is essential to prevent soil erosion, enhance groundwater recharge, and improve the overall health of river systems.

On this occasion, Principal Dr. Gopal Chauhan addressed the students and remarked, “Tree plantation is not just an environmental act, but a green legacy for future generations. Especially in catchment areas, such efforts help preserve water sources and maintain ecological balance.”

Around 30 students of the Disaster Management Cell actively participated in the drive, along with committee members, forest guards Monika and Mamta and Van Mitra Rahul from the Forest Department. Students planted saplings of Buxus, Oak, Bottle Brush and Baan in the designated area.

The students dug pits, planted saplings, watered them, and pledged to take regular care of them.
