Himachal weather sees new extremes as heatwave yellow alert issued for several parts; Una hits record 42°C

Shimla: The summer heat has started intensifying across Himachal Pradesh, with Una recording a scorching 42°C on Sunday, marking the highest temperature of the season so far.

This temperature surpassed the previous years’ high of 41°C in 2023 and 40°C in 2024 for the same period. However, it still remained below the April 27, 2022, high of 43.2°C.

The Meteorological Centre in Shimla has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions in various parts of the state from April 28 to 30, warning of rising temperatures and dry and hot winds.

Yellow alert for heatwave conditions

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of dry and hot winds blowing through the plains and mid-hills of the state starting Monday (April 28, 2025), with temperatures expected to remain significantly high.

The yellow alert, which spans April 28, 29 and 30, is focused on areas most vulnerable to heatwave-like conditions, particularly in the lower and mid-altitude regions, including Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur and Kangra districts.

The authorities have advised people, especially the elderly and children, to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and stay hydrated.

Rain, thunderstorms likely from May 1 to 4

A shift in weather is expected from May 1 to 4 as a fresh western disturbance becomes active over the region.
According to the IMD, several areas of Himachal Pradesh, including both plains and high-altitude regions, are likely to experience rain, thunderstorms and strong winds.

Wind speeds could reach 40 to 50 km per hour, accompanied by lightning and possible hail in isolated places.
A yellow alert for high winds has also been issued for this period, signalling the potential for localized disruption in transport and outdoor activities.
