In today’s era, the escalating pollution in our oceans has emerged as a grave global concern. While this crisis is preventable, it demands sincere commitment and collective efforts from every section of society.
- Waste segregation and proper disposal
We must begin by segregating dry and wet waste at its source. This includes waste generated by households, industries and commercial sectors. Both urban and rural areas should adopt systems that ensure regular door-to-door collection of waste. It is equally important to dispose of this waste in a scientific and responsible manner to prevent it from entering rivers and oceans. - Reducing plastic usage
To protect marine ecosystems, we must reduce the use of plastic products, especially those designed for single use. Items like plastic bags, cutlery, bottles and snack wrappers should be banned. Instead, we should promote eco-friendly alternatives such as cloth bags and reusable water bottles made from steel or clay. These alternatives are safe, durable and environmentally sustainable. - Regulating ocean-dumping
Strict regulations must be enforced to prevent ships from dumping waste into oceans. Fishing gear that is often abandoned or lost in the sea must be retrieved promptly, as it poses serious dangers to marine animals. Negligence in this area can result in long-lasting harm to ocean biodiversity. - Controlling industrial and domestic pollution
It is critical to prevent untreated sewage and industrial waste from being released directly into water bodies. Such discharges severely pollute the water and pose threats to aquatic life and human health. Effective treatment systems and infrastructure should be established to manage this waste responsibly. Special attention should also be given to waste that settles at the ocean floor, as it can contribute to the extinction of marine species. - Spreading awareness through education
Education plays a key role in shaping responsible behaviour. School students and local residents must be educated about the consequences of marine pollution. Public awareness campaigns can empower communities to take proactive steps in reducing waste and protecting water bodies. - Call for global and local action

Individuals, communities, governments and industries must work together to adopt sustainable practices.
