Dharamshala
The Himachal Pradesh government’s decision to merge historic schools has drawn sharp criticism from BJP state media co-incharge Advocate Vishw Chaksu, who launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
Chaksu argued that institutions dating back to the British era, with names etched in history, are now being erased under the Sukhu administration. He highlighted the case of Dharamshala Boys’ School, established in 1926 and currently celebrating its centenary year, which the government plans to merge.
The century-old school has produced numerous distinguished alumni, including IAS and HAS officers, army officials, and judges. It was once ranked among Punjab’s top three schools when Himachal was part of Punjab, and it pioneered NCC training and vocational education long before such concepts were widely known.
Calling the merger “intolerable,” Chaksu accused the government of dismantling educational heritage under the guise of “system change.” He emphasized that the school has ample land and facilities, making the merger unjustifiable.
“As a former student of this institution, I know its value. Instead of improving education, the Chief Minister is destroying it. This decision will widen the gap between the government and the people, ultimately uprooting the administration itself,” Chaksu declared.
He warned that erasing the identity of such historic schools amounts to playing with the future of children and will have political consequences for the ruling party.
