PALAMPUR: In a shocking incident, a migrant worker was murdered allegedly by his roommate on Thursday (May 23) night in ward number 12 Ghugghar Tanda under the Palampur Municipal Corporation in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. The accused fled the scene but was arrested by the police in Shahpur at midnight after an intensive search.
The deceased, Vijay Pal (50), originally from Raddhana village in Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, had been living in the area for nearly 25 years. He shared a rented house with the accused, Rohit Kumar (23), also from Uttar Pradesh, for the past two years.
According to reports, the incident occurred late Thursday night when Vijay and Rohit, who had both reportedly consumed alcohol, got into a heated argument. The altercation escalated and Rohit allegedly struck Vijay on the head with a small gas cylinder, resulting in his death.
Following the murder, Rohit fled the scene on a motorcycle, later abandoning it and switching to a taxi to evade the police. However, the police tracked him down and arrested him in Shahpur after a prolonged chase.
Neighbours and the landlord were alerted by sounds of fighting coming from Vijay’s room. When the landlord checked the room, he found Vijay unconscious. Despite being rushed to the Civil Hospital, Vijay was declared dead on arrival. The hospital staff immediately notified the police, who took possession of the body and initiated a search for the suspect.
DSP Lokendra Negi confirmed the incident, stating that the police had conducted a post-mortem of Vijay’s body at the Tanda hospital, following which the body was handed over to Vijay’s relatives. The police are interrogating Rohit to ascertain the precise motive behind the murder, with alcohol consumption believed to be a contributing factor.
