Dharamshala has emerged as a hot seat in the byelections to six Assembly constituencies of Himachal Pradesh.
After considerable deliberation, the Congress has nominated Devendra Singh Jaggi as their candidate against Sudhir Sharma of the BJP. Jaggi’s selection came following demands from local Congress workers for a candidate native to the area.
Additionally, Jaggi’s proximity to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and his history within the organisation played a role in his selection. Sources said all sections within the Congress are supporting Jaggi, a former Mayor of Dharamshala Municipal Corporation and the current Congress state general secretary who maintains a strong presence within the city.
Further discussions regarding other potential candidates occurred, with candidates attending meetings in Delhi. Eventually, consensus was reached in favour of Jaggi. He has been actively campaigning for the past month and is believed to have been aware of his nomination beforehand.
Rakesh Choudhary, who contested against Sudhir Sharma in the previous Assembly elections under the BJP banner, also vied for the ticket from Congress. Choudhary’s alignment with the Chief Minister is attributed to his opposition to Sudhir’s affiliation with the BJP.
Jaggi, born on April 19, 1973, has a background in mechanical engineering and a history of political roles, including Deputy Mayor and Mayor of Dharamshala Municipal Corporation, among others.
Jaggi expressed gratitude to the Congress high command for his nomination and expressed confidence in winning the election with the support of local residents and party members. He will file nomination on May 14, with Chief Minister Sukhu expected to attend the event.
