DHARAMSHALA: In the political battleground of Kangra in Himachal Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken the lead by holding around 120 meetings across the parliamentary constituency even as the Congress announced its candidate only a day ago on Tuesday (April 30, 2024).

The Congress is yet to kick off its campaign as the party has nominated former Union Minister Anand Sharma for the contest from Kangra. Anand Sharma, a septuagenarian hailing from Shimla, enters the election fray with a wealth of political experience, having served the party in influential roles in Delhi over the years.

Sources said Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had advocated for Anand Sharma’s candidature to “shield” his close aide and Nagrota MLA RS Bali, whose name was being considered from Kangra.

Initially, Congress circles were abuzz with speculation about Bali entering the fray. However, the first-time MLA wrote a two-page letter in which he hinted his reluctance for the contest saying the “high command must consult him before taking any such decision as he needed to seek approval from his constituents in his Assembly segment”.

While the Congress struggled to select a candidate, the BJP has been actively engaged in grassroots-level campaigning, with party officials conducting over 120 meetings thus far. The party has meticulously organised meetings across Assembly constituencies, strategising and mobilising workers from day one.

On Wednesday, senior BJP officials convened a crucial meeting of the party’s youth wing in Nurpur, focusing on enhancing social media outreach and campaign strategies.
Looking ahead, the BJP has a series of meetings planned in Kangra, including a significant gathering in Nagrota Bagwan, a bastion traditionally held by the Congress.

Booth-level workers are slated to participate in this crucial meeting, which will feature addresses by senior party leaders currently touring the Kangra parliamentary constituency.
