Dharamshala: Kangra Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa emphasized the necessity for public awareness regarding disaster management. Alongside natural disasters like earthquakes, the threat of man-made disasters has also increased.
Speaking at a mock drill organized on Kangra Earthquake Remembrance Day at the DC office premises on Friday, Bairwa addressed employees, stressing on the importance of disaster management to mitigate losses during calamities.
He mentioned that plans for disaster management have been prepared at district and sub-divisional levels, with regular training workshops conducted at various levels. Additionally, disaster buddies have been trained at the village level to ensure prompt relief and rehabilitation efforts during emergencies. He highlighted that masons are also trained for constructing earthquake-resistant buildings.
To minimize risks, appropriate land use and expert advice for building construction are sought, ensuring no loss during disasters.
“Drop, Cover, and Hold” Principle:
During earthquakes, one should immediately drop to the ground, take cover under sturdy objects, and hold onto something firm to prevent injuries. It is advised to stay away from windows, glass, or heavy shelves and furniture that can topple.
Alert during the Drill:
During the mock drill, sirens blared in the DC office, prompting employees to immediately take protective measures. They slowly exited their offices, adopting a posture to protect their heads, and gathered at safe locations.
Information and Public Relations department artists also raised awareness through a short play. Additional Deputy Commissioner Saurabh Jassal, ADM Dr Harish Gajju, SDM, along with various officials and employees, were present on the occasion.
