Dharamshala Unemployed Teachers Association protests Himachal govt’s decision to give jobs on guest lecture basis

DHARAMSHALA: Members of the Unemployed Teachers Association along with aspiring teachers staged a protest in Dharamshala against the recent decision of the Himachal Pradesh government to recruit ‘guest teachers’ instead of providing employment on permanent basis. The protesters raised slogans and took part in a rally to voice their concerns, ultimately submitting a memorandum to the District Collector expressing their reservations about the move.

The crux of the opposition lies in the apprehensions of the unemployed youth who fear the inherent instability of guest teacher appointments, which are slated for a duration of one to two years. The protesters argued that such short-term employment offered little job security and left individuals in a constant state of uncertainty, as they could potentially lose their positions at any given time.

Criticism was also directed at the recruitment criteria, with protestors contending that the government’s decision was flawed and detrimental to the aspirations of those diligently preparing for teacher recruitment exams. The insistence on temporary appointments was viewed as a disservice to the dedicated youth who have been eagerly awaiting employment opportunities.

“The government’s decision is absolutely wrong. The youth are waiting for employment, and this recruitment will not provide the stability and permanence they seek. Those investing time in preparing for teacher exams will face unwarranted losses. This approach opens the door to backdoor entries, contrary to the principles of a fair and transparent recruitment process,” remarked a spokesperson for the Unemployed Teachers Association.
