In a remarkable first, the elusive Himalayan Serow has been captured on video in the Dalhousie catchment area. This rare sighting is being hailed as a significant milestone for the region’s rich biodiversity.
The Himalayan Serow, a shy and solitary mountain-dwelling species, is rarely seen in the wild. According to the Forest Department, this video evidence marks the first documented proof of the animal’s presence in the Dalhousie catchment. Officials say the record not only highlights the area’s ecological wealth but also strengthens scientific knowledge about the species’ distribution and conservation in the Western Himalayas.

Dr. Kuldeep Singh Jamwal, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Dalhousie Forest Division, described the footage as “an extremely important achievement.” He emphasized that the documentation reflects the ecological significance of the forests and will aid in making conservation strategies more effective. The department, he added, remains committed to wildlife protection, scientific monitoring, and safeguarding natural habitats.
Wildlife experts note that the Himalayan Serow is considered a key species in the Himalayan ecosystem, and its presence signals a healthy forest environment.
