The political landscape in Himachal Pradesh has been stirred by sharp allegations of a “financial deal” linked to the Congress party’s Rajya Sabha nomination. The claims, made by senior BJP leader and former Sujanpur MLA Rajinder Rana, have triggered a political confrontation, with Congress nominee Anurag Sharma dismissing the charges as baseless and politically motivated.

The “Economic and Political Emergency” Claim

Addressing a press conference, Rana launched a strong attack on the government led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. He described the prevailing situation in the state as an “economic and political emergency,” alleging that governance had become driven by personal proximity to power rather than merit or seniority.

Rana questioned the Congress party’s decision to nominate Anurag Sharma for the Rajya Sabha seat, challenging the narrative that he is a grassroots worker. He alleged that Sharma had benefited from government contracts worth crores over the past two years and demanded clarity from the Chief Minister.

“The Chief Minister should clarify when this alleged meeting in Dubai took place and whether any financial arrangements were made in connection with the Rajya Sabha ticket,” Rana said. He also claimed that discontent was growing among Congress MLAs, government employees and youth in the state, accusing the government of ignoring their concerns while focusing on political management.

“Baseless and Politically Motivated”

Responding to the allegations, Anurag Sharma rejected the claims outright, calling them false and politically driven. Speaking to reporters, Sharma said such accusations reflected a mindset rooted in political brokerage.

“I have never been involved in such practices. Whatever I have achieved is the result of honest work and dedication,” Sharma said.

Addressing the “Dubai meeting” allegation, Sharma said he had not travelled to Dubai in the last 25 years, dismissing the claim as completely unfounded.

He also responded to questions regarding his business background, explaining that his contracting business was started by his father and had been operating for many years. Sharma added that his company’s turnover was actually higher during the previous BJP government, arguing that his professional activities were not linked to political patronage.

A Fresh Political Flashpoint

The controversy has turned the Rajya Sabha nomination into a new flashpoint in Himachal Pradesh politics. While the BJP is using the issue to question the transparency of the Congress leadership, the Congress has framed the allegations as an attempt to target a party loyalist through unverified claims.

As the political exchange intensifies, the allegations surrounding the alleged “Dubai connection” remain unproven, but they have added another layer to the ongoing political rivalry in a state already witnessing sharp partisan contestation.
