A controversy has erupted in Himachal Pradesh after a video allegedly showing a recently appointed chairman making threatening remarks at the Sundernagar helipad surfaced on social media, sparking sharp political reactions and raising questions about the conduct of individuals holding public office.

The chairman, who was appointed to the post only a few months ago and is widely regarded as a close aide of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has come under scrutiny after the video began circulating online. Political observers say his proximity to the Chief Minister and the liberty that comes with such access have further intensified the debate around the incident.

According to eyewitness accounts and the footage being shared online, the chairman can reportedly be heard using aggressive language and issuing threats in a public setting. Critics argue that such remarks are not expected from someone occupying a responsible position in the government, particularly in a state like Himachal Pradesh, which is known for its relatively calm and civil political culture.

The incident is said to have taken place at the Sundernagar helipad, where the chairman’s comments were captured during what appeared to be a heated exchange. The video, which has also been seen on social media platforms, has drawn strong reactions from the public, with several users questioning whether individuals close to the ruling establishment are exercising their authority with restraint.

Many commentators on social media have also questioned whether the government’s promise of “Vyavastha Parivartan” (systemic change) is being reflected in the conduct of those holding positions of power. Some have argued that public representatives are expected to maintain decorum and dignity, especially in public spaces.

The issue has also provided ammunition to the opposition. Nachan MLA Vinod Kumar strongly criticized the incident, describing it as a reflection of “the arrogance of power.” He said that when individuals in authority lose control over their words and actions, it sends the wrong message about governance and accountability.

Vinod Kumar further claimed that, according to information available to him, the chairman Lal Singh had attempted to approach the Chief Minister’s helicopter even before its rotors had completely stopped, raising concerns about adherence to safety protocols during the event.

The controversy has quickly become a talking point in political circles, particularly in the Mandi region—often referred to as “Chhoti Kashi” for its rich cultural traditions and reputation for civility in public life.

With the video continuing to circulate online, political observers believe the matter could gain further traction if a clear explanation or response does not emerge from the concerned quarters. The episode has once again brought into focus the expectations of public conduct from those entrusted with positions of responsibility in the state government.
