The CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT) marked National Science Day with great enthusiasm on its campus, celebrating the theme “Women in Science: Catalyzing Viksit Bharat.”
The day commemorates the discovery of the Raman Effect by Nobel Laureate Sir C.V. Raman in 1928.
Highlights of the Celebration:
- Inaugural Address: Dr. Sudesh Kumar Yadav, Director CSIR-IHBT, welcomed dignitaries and emphasized the institute’s contributions to bio-economy, livelihood improvement, and missions in floriculture and aroma. He lauded initiatives like Jigyasa and skill development programs aimed at empowering youth.
- Chief Guest: Dr. Shekar C. Mande, President of the Indian National Science Academy and former DG-CSIR, congratulated IHBT for its work benefiting rural communities. He illustrated the Raman Effect and stressed curiosity and indigenous technologies for inclusive growth.
- Guest of Honour: Dr. Sudhir Sopory, Senior Emeritus Scientist, ICGEB, urged collective efforts to advance science and nation-building.
- Key Lecture: Dr. Sridevi Annapurna Singh, former Director CSIR-CFTRI, delivered a lecture on “Achieving Food and Nutritional Security in Bharat – Pivotal Role of Women.” She highlighted traditional foods, balanced diets, and the contributions of pioneering women scientists like Dr. Kamala Sohonie.
Major Announcements:
- Six technology transfer agreements were signed with industry partners across Maharashtra, Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh.
- An MoU for academic collaboration was inked with Chitkara University.
- Release of a new plant variety Inula racemosa “Him Pushkarmool.”
- Launch of stevia-based products developed by RJ Saints, Una.
- Inauguration of Jaivsampada Udyan, a garden under CSIR’s Mission on Bioresource Conservation.
Special Recognition:
Female S&T staff of IHBT were honoured for their contributions. The event also saw participation from dignitaries, media representatives, and students, including 39 students and 2 teachers from JNV Paprola under the Jigyasa programme.
The celebrations reflected IHBT’s commitment to science for societal benefit and the pivotal role of women in shaping a Viksit Bharat.
