SHIMLA:
In a move seldom seen in Himachal Pradesh, the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led government has suspended IPS officer SP Rajesh Verma, who was posted in the Department of Telecommunications and Technical Services in Shimla. The state Home Department initiated the action in view of an ongoing departmental disciplinary inquiry against him, officials confirmed.

According to the suspension order issued under the Central Civil Services Rules, 1965, the suspension is effective immediately. During the suspension period, Verma’s headquarters will remain the Himachal Pradesh Police Headquarters in Shimla. The order also states that he will not be allowed to leave headquarters without prior permission from the Director General of Police, Himachal Pradesh.

Order issued by Chief Secretary Sanjay Gupta

The directive was issued by Chief Secretary Sanjay Gupta, and copies have been circulated to the concerned authorities for necessary action.

Suspending an officer of SP rank is a rare occurrence in the state. In recent years, only a few such actions have been taken. Earlier, Kullu SP Gaurav Singh was suspended following the well-known “slap incident” and in the infamous Kotkhai Gudiya death case, IG Zahoor Zaidi was suspended after his arrest.

With the suspension of SP Rajesh Verma, the Sukhu government has again signaled its intent to enforce strict administrative discipline within the policing system.
