Chamba
Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur conducted a detailed tour of disaster-affected regions in Chamba district, including Bhatiyat and Dalhousie constituencies, where he met with victims and assessed the damage caused by recent natural calamities.
Thakur expressed deep concern over the widespread destruction, noting that not only infrastructure but also the lives and livelihoods of ordinary citizens have been severely impacted. “Homes have been washed away, orchards destroyed, and livestock lost. Many families are living in houses that are no longer habitable,” he said.
Accusations of Administrative Neglect
Local residents have accused the administration of negligence and discriminatory relief efforts. Thakur warned that such behavior would not be tolerated. “No disaster victim should face bias or indifference. I urge people to monitor the administration’s actions and report any unfair treatment so that we can raise these issues with the government,” he stated.
He assured affected families that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stands firmly with them and will continue to support them through this crisis.
Call for Fair and Urgent Relief
Addressing officials, Thakur emphasized that relief must be provided based on actual need and damage, without succumbing to political or local pressure. He urged that central government aid be directed to genuinely affected individuals rather than influential figures.
During his visit to villages like Kakira, Tanu Hatti, Mel, and Kakdar in Bhatiyat, Thakur heard grievances from Rajasthani residents. He later addressed a public gathering in Simdi, Dalhousie constituency.
Widespread Damage and Public Outcry
Thakur highlighted that in every location he visited, complaints were rampant. “Land is sinking in several areas, entire villages are at risk, yet the government’s presence is barely visible. In some places, even basic administrative officers like patwaris haven’t reached, and senior officials are ignoring public concerns,” he said.
He stressed that timely assistance is crucial during disasters, and delays render relief meaningless.
Leaders in Attendance
Thakur was accompanied by Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan, BJP state president Dr. Rajeev Bindal, former Speaker Vipin Parmar, Deputy Speaker Dr. Hansraj, Dalhousie MLA D.S. Thakur, Bharmour MLA Dr. Janak Raj, and former Bhatiyat MLA Bikram Jaryal, along with local officials and party workers.
