Himachal BJP MP Kangana Ranaut reveals Parliament canteen ‘secret’ of opposition leaders that may offend them

Mandi:
Himachal Pradesh MP and Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has stirred a political hornet’s nest with her blunt disclosure about what she calls the “dirty secret” of Indian politics — the striking contrast between televised political rivalry and behind-the-scenes bonhomie among leaders across party lines.

Her remarks, though made in an old interview, are now going viral on social media, sparking furious reactions from netizens who feel betrayed by what they describe as a “performative political culture”.

In a candid conversation with a YouTube channel, Mandi BJP MP Kangana said, “There is a limit to how friendly politicians are. The rivalry is just for the cameras. In Parliament, everyone debates and fights on various issues, but the moment they step out of the House, it’s all smiles, laughter and shared meals in the canteen. Everyone parties together, including with opposition leaders.”

Her remarks, although recorded in August 2024, have resurfaced online and are being widely circulated. The viral clip has triggered a wave of commentary, with many accusing politicians of deceiving the public by staging fierce confrontations in public while maintaining cozy relationships behind closed doors.

BJP MP says everyone parties together

Kangana went on to say, “I have many friends in the opposition. I used to think they were enemies, their faces looked tense and serious during debates. But as soon as we step out, everyone bursts into laughter. There’s no real enmity.”

This behind-the-curtain peek into political life has come as a rude shock to some citizens who believed in the authenticity of the ideological clashes they saw on TV.

Netizens lash out

Social media platforms have exploded with reactions — many critical, some sarcastic. “Kangana has accidentally exposed the BJP,” one user wrote. Another quipped, “Now we know it’s all a game. They fool the public, pretend to fight, and then have chai and samosas together.”

Some users targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while others took digs at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, reflecting how Kangana’s remarks have put leaders across the spectrum in an uncomfortable spotlight.

In the same interview, Kangana, who has transitioned from films to politics, made another controversial statement: “In my opinion, politicians are a waste. Even if a leader has studied till class 10 or failed class 8, they still end up leading highly educated and efficient bureaucrats. That’s the irony.”

Her sweeping comment is likely to ruffle feathers within her own party and beyond, especially among political veterans who pride themselves on experience over formal education.

‘Pahadi innocence’ and future plans

Reflecting on her election win from Mandi, Kangana said, “The people of the hills liked my innocence. I am still that simple, straight-forward girl. I’m strong — and people appreciated that.” She also touched upon her personal aspirations, stating her desire to marry and start a family “at the right time,” while distancing herself from the “trauma” of Bollywood parties.
