Mandi activist Rajesh Kapoor meets Union Minister Harsh Malhotra, flags slow work on crucial NH-3

MANDI: Highlighting the plight of thousands of daily commuters and residents in Himachal Pradesh’s Tungal region, social activist and Pannalal Raksha Memorial Trust founder Rajesh Kapoor has raised serious concerns over the sluggish pace of construction work on National Highway-3.

The matter was taken up directly with Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra during a recent meeting in New Delhi.

Kapoor submitted a detailed memorandum to the Minister, outlining how the widening project between Mandi and Kotli had been moving at a snail’s pace since its inception two years ago. He expressed deep concern that at the current speed, the project is unlikely to be completed even in the next few years.

“Lakhs of people in the region are suffering every day due to this delay. The road, which connects several areas to the Mandi district headquarters, has become extremely difficult to navigate, making daily travel a nightmare for commuters,” Kapoor informed the Minister.

He also raised specific complaints against Surya Construction Company, the firm responsible for executing the project.

Kapoor alleged that the company had not only been negligent in maintaining construction timelines, but had also failed to pay rent on time for local properties it had leased for project-related activities.
Seeking immediate central intervention, Kapoor urged the minister to take swift action to resolve the issues and expedite the completion of the project.

Responding to the concerns, the minister assured Kapoor of prompt action and promised that the matter would be reviewed at the earliest.
