Mandi (Munish Sood)
The recent attack by the mining mafia on IAS officer and Mandi Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Om Kant Thakur, who is still recovering from his injuries, has sent shockwaves across administrative circles in Himachal Pradesh.
Following the incident, SDMs posted in border regions and highly sensitive areas are now raising serious concerns about their safety, demanding security from the state government.
Several SDMs, particularly those in districts affected by illegal mining and criminal activities, feel increasingly vulnerable. They argue that their responsibilities often bring them into direct conflict with powerful mafias, and without proper security, carrying out their duties has become a major challenge.
Baddi SDM’s repeated pleas ignored
Vivek Mahajan, the SDM of Baddi, one of the most sensitive sub-divisions bordering Punjab and Haryana, has been struggling to get a personal security officer (PSO). Despite multiple requests to the police department, his plea has remained unanswered.
Being a newly formed sub-division surrounded by neighboring states and a large migrant population, Baddi is a hotspot for illegal activities. The industrial belt of Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh frequently reports illegal mining and though the SDM wants to take action, the absence of security makes it nearly impossible.
With over two dozen secret routes connecting Baddi to Punjab through rivers, the region remains a hub for unlawful elements. “I often avoid travelling at night because it is unsafe. If I cannot ensure my own security, how can I confidently enforce the law?” questioned Mahajan.
Nalagarh SDM says security enhances efficiency
Nalagarh SDM Raj Kumar echoed similar concerns. He stated that when he took charge in September last year, his predecessor had a PSO, but the state government later withdrew it. He has since written to the SP’s office, but his request has been ignored.
“Nalagarh is on the Punjab border, and unknown people frequently trespass into the area. We have to deal with such individuals regularly and having a PSO provides a sense of security, which in turn enhances our efficiency,” he said, adding that even repeated reminders had not resulted in any action.
Amb SDM too voices concern
Amb SDM Sachin Sharma also voiced his concerns, stating that working in such conditions was extremely difficult. “If I cannot protect myself, how can I guarantee the safety of the residents?” he asked.
He clarified that he was not against any government decision but emphasised that without adequate security, a government officer could not work independently and impartially. “We welcome all policy changes, but the government must also ensure that its officers feel secure while discharging their duties,” he added.
Mandi incident sparks widespread fear
While the Mandi SDM could not be reached for comment as he is still recovering, sources said he had verbally requested security from the SP and the district administration after cracking down on the sand mafia.
The attack on him has further strengthened the demands of SDMs across the state for proper security arrangements.
