Himachal Pradesh has been experiencing dry weather over the past few weeks, with clear skies leading to a rise in day temperatures after the Meteorological Department getting several of its forecasts wrong.
January has so far witnessed a massive rainfall deficit, significantly affecting crops and horticulture. The lack of rain has left wheat crops parched, while the scarcity of snowfall threatens apple production, raising concerns among farmers and orchardists.
However, the weather is expected to change as a western disturbance becomes active from January 29. The Meteorological Department has predicted rain and snow across the state for the next five days.

5-day forecast for rain, snow in Himachal

High and mid-hill regions are likely to receive rain and snowfall on January 29 and 30, while heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected statewide on January 31 and February 1.
On February 2, rain and snowfall are anticipated in higher altitudes, with clear skies likely in the lower regions.
The earlier forecast for rain and snow by January 25 largely missed its mark, leaving farmers and horticulturists anxious as they await relief for their crops.
This week’s predicted precipitation could offer much-needed respite to failing crops and fruit-bearing trees.

Freezing temperature in three towns

Currently, temperature in three towns — Tabo (-8.8°C), Keylong (-7.1°C), and Kukumseri (-6.2°C) — remain below freezing. Meanwhile, Una recorded the highest maximum temperature at 26.6°C on Monday.
Other regions, including Shimla, Sundernagar and Bhuntar, also reported above-average daytime temperatures.
If the forecast holds, the expected rain and snow may help restore soil moisture and improve prospects for the upcoming agricultural season.
