The construction on the much-anticipated Kullu Bijli Mahadev ropeway project in Kharahal Valley is set to commence soon, with formalities and clearances nearly complete.
The company responsible for building the ropeway has arrived on site, with initial groundwork expected to begin soon from the Nature Park in Mohal. However, as per guidelines, the company must deposit Rs 6 crore in the government’s account before breaking ground on the project.
Ropeway to boost tourism, accessibility
The 2.33 km-long ropeway will transport tourists from Mohal to the revered Bijli Mahadev temple within a 10-minute ride, significantly easing access to the shrine. Currently, visitors reach the temple by covering 15 km by road from Kullu, followed by a 1.5 km trek. The new ropeway promises to boost tourism and economic activity, making the temple and surrounding valley more accessible.
Forest Department requirements to be met
The project, impacting 7 hectares of forest land, requires financial contributions from the company to cover tree removal and land use. This includes Rs 35 lakh for forest land, Rs 42 lakh under the Net Present Value (NPB) scheme and over Rs 5 crore for the removal of 80 trees, primarily deodar and pine. Forest officials have clarified that the company must complete these payments to the government before receiving the Ministry of Environment and Pollution’s final clearance.
Rising project costs amid delays
The current estimated cost for the Bijli Mahadev ropeway stands at Rs 283 crore, but any delays in fulfilling these formalities could further inflate expenses. Despite Union Minister Nitin Gadkari performing the Bhoomi Pujan for the project on March 5, 2024, administrative processes have yet to be completed, potentially impacting the budget. A construction company official said that after the resolution of these formalities, work would begin without any delay.
