Panchayats in Himachal Pradesh will implement a ‘name and save’ policy to deter youth from falling into drug addictio
By fostering stronger ties with local communities, these grassroots institutions will identify individuals at risk and extend early intervention, helping them before addiction takes hold.
The initiative, announced during a state-level workshop on drug eradication at Raj Bhavan in Shimla, will also involve local support groups, rehabilitation programmes and counseling centres to support addicts and their families in their recovery.
Presiding over the workshop, Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla emphasised the critical role of panchayati raj institutions (PRIs) in battling the scourge of drug addiction.
He expressed confidence that the combined efforts of PRI representatives would lead to the eradication of drug addiction from the state.
“To uphold the spirit of Devbhoomi, we must protect our youth from the trap of drug abuse through community involvement,” he asserted, noting the profound social, economic and health impact of drug addiction on the state’s future.
Panchayati Raj Minister Anirudh Singh, in attendance, underscored the vital role of panchayat representatives in influencing rural communities.
“Drug-free panchayats will be actively encouraged. Drug addiction is stripping youth of their dreams and potential, and it is our responsibility to address this crisis head-on,” he said.
Anirudh proposed engaging the public in awareness efforts through street plays, youth clubs and recreational activities as effective preventive measures.
By leveraging public participation, the campaign aims to cultivate a culture of vigilance and support at the grassroots level.
The Governor further remarked that there should be no place for drug abuse in the sacred land of Devbhoomi Himachal Pradesh, warning that addiction disrupts social values and undermines the strength of joint family systems.
