MANDI: Amid the ongoing festive season, the Himachal Pradesh Food Safety Department has heightened inspections of sweets and food products across Mandi district to prevent the sale of substandard items.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety LD Thakur, the department has sent a total of 72 samples, including sweets and other festival-related food, for laboratory testing in October. The initial results revealed that 10 samples were found substandard, leading the department to issue formal notices to the sellers demanding immediate explanations.
In addition to the failed samples, authorities seized 3 quintals 47 kg of milk cake from vendors, suspecting it to be produced with substances other than milk fat. “The milk cake came from outside states and initial observations suggested potential adulteration,” Thakur explained. Samples of these products are now under scrutiny to confirm the ingredients.

Similarly, 15 kg of soan papdi has been seized after authorities found date labels altered from October 2023 to October 2024 on some boxes. Both items are currently being examined for quality compliance.
Amid these findings, the Food Safety Department has issued an advisory urging consumers to be cautious when purchasing sweets and food items. Thakur encouraged the public to ask for bills with every purchase, verify product labels for dates and authenticity and report any concerns or suspicions to the department.
“If consumers notice anything unusual, they can file a complaint, and we will take immediate action by sending the sample for testing,” Thakur said.
