SHIMLA: In a late-evening surprise inspection, Shimla Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap visited PM Shri Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) in Theog on Wednesday. Arriving around 8 pm, the Deputy Commissioner stayed until 10 pm, inspecting various aspects of the school, including the classes, hostels and mess. The visit was aimed at assessing the quality of facilities provided to students and addressing any shortcomings.
During the inspection, Kashyap engaged with students, taking feedback on their academic progress, school environment and other aspects of school life. He also dined with the children in the school mess and inquired about the quality and nutritional value of the meals served. The Deputy Commissioner instructed the Food Inspector to regularly take food samples from the hostel mess and submit reports to the District Collector’s office.
Emphasising the importance of providing nutritious and quality food, he stressed the need for regular inspections.

In his interaction with students, Kashyap encouraged them to work hard, actively participate in sports and engage in peer discussions to better understand their lessons. He also urged them to develop a habit of reading the dictionary to improve their vocabulary.
Key Issues Flagged:
• Inadequate lighting: During the inspection, it was found that lighting in the mess and study areas was insufficient, causing difficulties for students, especially during night study hours. The Deputy Commissioner instructed the school management to install additional lights in these areas to ensure a proper study environment.
• Boys’ hostel inspection: DC Kashyap also visited the Aravalli Boys Hostel, where he inspected the cleanliness and interacted with the students about their daily routines. The cleanliness in the hostel was found to be satisfactory and the students provided positive feedback on the living conditions.
• Road access and garbage disposal: The inspection revealed that the road leading from the main road to the school premises required urgent metaling. The Deputy Commissioner directed SDM Mukesh Sharma to prepare an estimate for the road repair within 15 days and submit it for further action.
Additionally, the school management raised concerns about the lack of a proper garbage disposal system. To address this, the DC instructed the SDM to arrange for a vehicle to collect garbage from the school regularly to maintain cleanliness on campus.
The inspection team included ADC Abhishek Verma, Theog SDM Mukesh Sharma, AC to DC Gopal Chand Sharma, District Language Officer Anil Harta and other school staff and officials.
