India’s longest Rs 1,734 crore Shimla ropeway project moves step closer to reality

Shimla ropeway project

Shimla: The construction of the world’s second longest ropeway, set to be built in Shimla, has moved one step closer to reality with the project receiving advance green approval for the tender. The announcement was made by Himachal Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, confirming that the National Development Bank (NDB) has given the go-ahead for the project, which will cost more than Rs 1,734 crore.

The ropeway, stretching 13.79 km, will revolutionise transportation within Shimla, the capital city known for its chronic traffic congestion. Agnihotri revealed that 80 per cent of the project’s funding will come from the NDB, while the remaining 20 per cent will be borne by the Himachal government.

Stations to be built across city

The ropeway will have several key stations to ease movement across the city, with the first boarding station located near Taradevi, around 20 km from Shimla. Other stations will include Chakkar court complex, Tutikandi Parking, New ISBT, 103 Tunnel, Railway Station, Victory Tunnel, Old Bus Stand, Lakkar Bazaar, IGMC, Sanjauli, Navbahar, Secretariat, and the Lift, which will significantly ease traffic movement in these busy areas.

Project with Swiss-Austrian inspiration

Aimed at mirroring similar systems in Switzerland and Austria, the ropeway will feature 220 trolleys initially, with plans to expand to 660 trolleys by the project’s completion. The system will have the capacity to transport 2,000 people per hour, offering a much-needed solution to the city’s traffic woes.

This new ropeway is being hailed as one of the largest infrastructural developments in the state and will be the second-longest ropeway globally, after Bolivia’s 32-km cable car system.

Currently, Shimla has a smaller ropeway leading to Jakhu Temple, a popular tourist attraction, where a one-way ticket costs Rs 450. With the new ropeway, tourism and local transportation in Shimla are set to enter a new era, promising smoother and faster travel across the city.
