AI robots

SHIMLA: For the first time in Himachal Pradesh, artificial intelligence (AI) robots will soon begin teaching students at the Government Adarsh Senior Secondary School, Kotla.

The school has prepared a state-of-the-art digital smart classroom to facilitate the initiative. After successful trials, classes conducted by AI robots are expected to begin within the next couple of days. Over 300 students, from grades six to twelve, are enrolled in the school.

The smart classroom, equipped with advanced robotics, will be able to teach subjects such as physics, chemistry, humanities and commerce to up to 50 students at a time. The AI-driven robot, named Iris (Intelligent Robotics Interactive System), is powered by Google technology and is capable of answering even the most complex questions posed by students.

A team from Kerala, the first state in India to introduce robots in education, is training the school’s teachers on how to effectively incorporate robotic instruction into their lessons. Sudhir Kayastha, the grandson of the school’s founder, the late Diwan Sansar Chand, spearheaded this technological upgrade. In honour of his grandfather, he built the Robot Iris classroom through the SNK Foundation at a cost of Rs 15 lakhs, aiming to introduce cutting-edge education methods.

Kayastha emphasised that no other schools in North India are currently offering AI-based classes, positioning the Kotla school as a pioneer in the region. Established in 1952, the school gained its senior secondary status in 1995.

Principal Babita Sahotra expressed optimism about the new development, stating that modern technology would undoubtedly enhance the students’ learning experience. She hopes that the AI-powered teaching method will gradually become a key tool for improving education standards in the school.
