SHIMLA: Starting from today (October 1, 2024), living expenses in Himachal Pradesh are set to increase, with several changes impacting both domestic and industrial consumers.
For the first time, rural areas in Himachal will get water bills. Households in these areas will now have to pay a monthly fee of Rs 100 per connection. However, water meters will not be installed and bills will be uniformly charged. New water rates are also applicable for urban residents, adding to the cost of basic utilities.
Electricity bills are also seeing a revision. The state government has removed the Re 1 per unit subsidy for industrial electricity consumers. For domestic consumers, the relief will be available only up to 300 units. Those consuming less than 300 units will continue to receive a subsidy between Rs 1.83 and Rs 3.53 per unit, depending on the slab. However, if consumption exceeds 300 units, the Rs 1.03 subsidy will no longer apply, meaning higher electricity costs for many households.
On the brighter side, bus passengers, particularly those travelling in luxury buses, will get some respite. The Himachal Road Transport Corporation has announced a 10 per cent discount on fares for smart card holders on Volvo and AC buses. Previously, this discount was only available on ordinary buses. This facility will be available until March 31 next year, offering relief to frequent travelers across the state.
