Dharamshala: Tourism operators in Himachal Pradesh are urging the government and media to highlight safe travel zones as concerns over landslides and flash floods deter tourists ahead of a long weekend.
Decline in Tourism Amid Natural Disasters
Himachal Pradesh’s tourism industry is facing a sharp decline as reports of natural disasters lead to widespread travel cancellations. With a long weekend approaching, local businesses are anxious about the impact on their livelihoods.
Request for Clear Communication on Safe Zones
Sonia Brian, a travel agent, emphasized the need for clear communication. “We urgently need the government and media to highlight which areas are safe for tourists,” Brian said. “This will help restore traveler confidence and prevent further economic losses for our local businesses.”
In addition, the President of the Hoteliers’ Association, Ashwani Bamba , echoed the sentiment. “Our industry is struggling, and tourists are canceling their plans due to safety concerns. It is crucial that we get detailed updates on safe travel zones to reassure our guests and support our economy,”Bamba stated.
Deepak Deewan, a prominent travel agent, added, “The tourism sector in Himachal Pradesh is at a critical juncture. It’s essential for the government and media to provide detailed information on which areas are safe for travel. Clear and accurate updates will not only reassure potential tourists but also help our industry recover from the current downturn.”
Steady Growth in Foreign Tourist Visits
Recent data shows a steady increase in foreign tourist visits (FTVs) to Himachal, from 4,932 in 2021 to 62,806 in 2023. This growth underscores the state’s appeal, but the current situation threatens to reverse these gains.
Call for Balanced Safety Messaging
Industry experts are calling for a balanced narrative that emphasizes safety while promoting the unaffected regions of the state. By doing so, they hope to attract visitors back and support the local economy during this critical period.
Support from Ministry of Tourism Initiatives
Ongoing initiatives by the Ministry of Tourism, such as the “Dekho Apna Desh” campaign, aim to boost domestic tourism. Combined with targeted safety updates, these efforts could help Himachal Pradesh navigate through these challenging times and maintain its status as a premier tourist destination
