Several jets evacuating people from Afghanistan planes dropped flares and making combat landings as they conduct the rescue operation in Kabul. A French cargo jet was recorded dropping flares meant to fool heat-seeking equipment used in missiles.

WHO calls for pause to booster shots to reduce vaccine inequality

World Health Organisation (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Monday called for a two-month pause on administering booster shots of COVID-19 vaccines as a means of reducing global vaccine inequality. Of the 4.8 billion vaccine doses delivered to date globally, 75% have gone to only 10 countries.

US cannot abandon Afghanistan amid crisis: China

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that the US cannot simply abandon Afghanistan amid a crisis sparked by the Taliban takeover of the war-torn country. “The US is the root cause and the biggest external factor in the Afghan issue. The US should help maintain stability, avoid chaos and rebuild Afghanistan.” he further said.

Lebanon raises fuel prices by 66% amid economic crisis

Lebanon said that it’s increasing gasoline prices by 66% in a partial reduction of fuel subsidies amid an economic crisis in the country. The fuel crisis worsened this month when the central bank said it could no longer subsidise fuel. Iranian-backed Hezbollah has arranged for a shipment of fuel from Iran to help ease fuel shortage in Lebanon.

Russian gas pipeline to Europe dangerous weapon: Ukrainian President

Ukraine sees the soon-to-be-completed Nord Stream 2 pipeline carrying Russian gas to Europe and bypassing the eastern European country as “a dangerous geopolitical weapon”, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. The main risks after its completion will be “borne by Ukraine” but the pipeline will also be dangerous for Europe. Poland and Baltic states had also opposed the project in the past.
