Women in Himachal’s Sirmaur announce mass boycott of weddings that serve alcohol, penalty for gambling, drugs too
To combat alcoholism, the women of Tilorena panchayat in Tilordhar, part of Kamrau tehsil in Shillai Assembly constituency of Sirmaur district in Himachal Pradesh, have imposed a complete ban on the serving of alcohol at weddings and other social gatherings.
The women have resolved to take strict action against anyone violating this ban, including a mass boycott of any event where alcohol is served.
Additionally, the women have declared a fine of Rs 5,000 for those caught gambling or selling drugs within the panchayat. Persistent offenders will face police action.
This initiative was solidified during a meeting held in the courtyard of the Chautra Mahasu Devta temple in Shathi-Pashi, presided over by panchayat pradhan Parvati Sharma. About 120 women attended the meeting, showing strong community support.
The meeting revisited decisions made 15 years ago aimed at curbing drug addiction in the panchayat. It was noted that some individuals have been secretly ignoring these rules, leading to a resurgence of drug-related issues.
Despite the past measures, which had significantly reduced drug use, the community remains vigilant against the potential spread of addiction.
Key decisions at the meeting include a complete ban on alcohol and other intoxicants at weddings and social events, mass boycott of any event that serves alcohol and a fine of Rs 5,000 for gambling and drug selling, with police action for repeat offenders. The representatives of several other community committees were also present at the meeting.
