Dharamshala: The supporters of BJP leader Anurag Thakur, the Member of Parliament from Hamirpur, were in a shock after the former Union Minister was not included in the Modi cabinet 3.0. Political circles in the state are abuzz that this might be due to the outcome of the recent byelections where the BJP lost all major seats in Anurag’s parliamentary constituency.

Once again, two more seats in the Hamirpur parliamentary constituency, Dehra and Hamirpur, are scheduled for voting on July 10. Both areas had contributed with a lead during the parliamentary elections and had secured victory for Anurag against Congress candidate Satpal Raizda. However, it remained to be seen whether the BJP would secure victory here or not.

Earlier, the BJP had lost Gagret, Kutlehar and Sujanpur seats to the Congress during byelections that took place simultaneously with the parliamentary elections. All these seats were part of the Hamirpur parliamentary constituency. Anurag had witnessed leads from all these seats, but the party lost the Assembly elections to the Congress.

Now, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur is contesting from Dehra, making it tough for the BJP to secure victory for Hoshyar Singh, who was an independent MLA but was brought into the BJP during the recent political turmoil in the state. In Hamirpur too, the BJP had brought in Ashish Sharma, who had won independent elections and is now contesting on the BJP ticket. It was a tough task for the BJP to secure these seats under the Congress rule.

There were apprehensions that Anurag’s opponents within the party had already taken advantage of the situation after the defeat in the Assembly seats.

In Sujanpur byelection, the BJP secured the maximum victory margin of 23,853 votes in the parliamentary seat. The BJP secured 38,887 votes while the Congress got 15,034 votes. In Dehra, the BJP secured 34,739 votes while the Congress had 19,422 votes, resulting a margin of 15,317 votes. In Hamirpur Assembly seat, the BJP got 34,519 votes and the Congress 18,940 votes, with a margin of 15,579 votes.

In Gagret, where the BJP lost the Assembly byelections, the party secured 36,877 votes, while the Congress got 25,933 votes, with a margin of 10,944 votes. In Kutlehar, where the BJP lost, the party got 37,505 votes and the Congress received 29,686 votes, resulting in a margin of 7,819 votes.
