Watchman’s salary higher than teacher’s: Recruitment ad for Chamba govt school goes viral

Watchman Recruitment

An advertisement from Kasturba Gandhi Balika School in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh has gone viral on social media due to a surprising salary discrepancy. The ad, which seeks applications for the positions of a part-time teacher and a watchman, has caught everyone’s attention not for the job offers themselves, but for the salaries listed.

According to the ad, the part-time teacher position at the government school requires qualifications such as a BSc/MSc, BEd, and passing the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), offering a monthly salary of Rs 8,450. The job of a watchman, requiring only Class 10 qualification, comes with a higher salary of Rs 10,630.

This unexpected disparity has become a hot topic online, with many questioning how a job requiring advanced qualifications could offer less pay than one with minimal educational requirements.

The advertisement, published in a local newspaper, has led to criticism on social media. Some people have been sarcastically suggesting that aspiring teachers should instead apply to be watchmen for a better pay. Others expressed frustration, pointing to how the ad reflects the grim reality of how undervalued education and teachers have become.

Several users commented that after completing demanding degrees like BSc, MSc and BEd, young people are being offered salaries lower than those for less-skilled positions, calling it a “joke on the educated youth”. Some went as far as to say that the education system is making studying seem pointless when it doesn’t lead to fair compensation.

The recruitment, managed by the School Management Committee (SMC), is set to take place on October 20, 2024, at the SDM office in Bharmour.
