Shimla: In a significant development, the Sanjauli mosque committee has received the green light from the Waqf Board to proceed with the demolition of three unauthorised floors of the mosque.
The committee has committed to covering the costs of the demolition, which follows a Municipal Corporation (MC) court order issued on October 5 that mandated the demolition of the illegal structure.
This decision comes in the wake of escalating tensions and public protests surrounding the mosque’s construction in Sanjauli and other parts of Himachal Pradesh. On September 11, a large gathering of individuals from the majority community demonstrated against the illegal construction, expressing their concerns about adherence to local building regulations and zoning laws.

The protests highlighted growing communal sensitivities in the region and put immense pressure on local authorities to respond swiftly.
Faced with the rising unrest, the mosque committee took proactive measures by offering to voluntarily dismantle the illegal floors just a day after the protests on September 12. This gesture was aimed at easing tensions and fostering community harmony. The Waqf Board’s subsequent approval has now paved the way for the demolition to commence, with work expected to start today.
The situation surrounding the mosque has stirred considerable public and political debate, reflecting broader issues of religious sensitivities and communal relations in Himachal Pradesh. Many local residents hope that the demolition will help restore peace and cooperation between the communities.
However, the controversy has raised questions about future construction and adherence to regulations, prompting calls for more transparent governance and dialogue among different community groups in the area.
