USA’s New Hampshire Republican primary: Donald Trump delivers knockout blow to Nikki Haley

Washington: Former US President Donald Trump is projected to win the New Hampshire primary, according to the Decision Desk Headquarters. Nikki Haley is trailing Trump by just single digits but is in no position to fill the gap even if she wins the remainder of the votes.
Donald Trump in his victory speech described Nikki Haley as an ‘impostor’. Trump said: “Who the hell was the impostor that went up on the stage that went before and claimed victory?” He said. “She did very poorly actually.”
Trump has long been the Republican Party’s front-runner in the polls. New Hampshire had delivered Donald Trump his first primary victory in 2016.
Trump on Tuesday (Jan 23) thus became the first candidate in history to win New Hampshire three times and the first Republican candidate in almost 50 years to win both the Iowa Caucuses and New Hampshire Primaries since Jerald Ford in 1976.
While New Hampshire’s primary was expected to be a closer race, Trump was still predicted to come out on top.
Haley, who served as the UN ambassador under the Trump administration and is also a former governor of South Carolina, has argued she is better suited to beat President Joe Biden in a general election. She pointed to Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election as reason why the Republicans need new leadership.
In a speech shortly after the race was called for Trump, Haley congratulated the former president but said that she was in the race for the long haul. “This race is far from over,” Haley said. “There are dozens of states left to go.”
“With Donald Trump, Republicans have lost almost every competitive election,” she said. “We lost in 2018, we lost in 2020, we lost in 2022. The worst-kept secret in politics is how badly the Democrats want to run against Donald Trump.”
Haley challenged Trump to face her on the debate stage, saying: “He thinks he’d do better than me. Maybe he would, maybe he wouldn’t. But if he thinks that, then he should have no problem standing on a debate stage with me.”
