MANDI: The ongoing excavation for expanding the Mandi-Rewalsar road into a two-lane highway has endangered several homes.
The incessant rain on Thursday caused a massive landslide on a hill facing the road, posing a threat to the house of a local resident, Yugal Kishore Sharma, at Gajanoha, about 13 km from Mandi.
- Sharma alleged that the road construction company conducted the excavation unscientifically and ignored local opposition.
- “They did not build any protective walls,” he said. As a result, debris from the base of the house has slid down, posing an imminent threat to the structure.
- “With the entire rainy season ahead, staying in the house is unsafe. It’s becoming increasingly difficult for the family to spend nights here,” he said. In an attempt to avert the threat, the family has used tarpaulin sheets to cover the loose soil and prevent rainwater from entering it, but this is not a long-term solution.
- Sharma has informed the local patwari (land record officer) about the situation and has urged the Balh Sub-Divisional Officer to take immediate action.
- He has requested orders for necessary measures to protect the house and instructed the construction company to build a protective wall at the earliest.
