Una MLA joins protest by liquor unit workers against unpaid salaries

Their salaries for the last six months not paid, workers of a known liquor industry in Mehatpur industrial area have opened a front against the unit’s management.

The workers on Thursday protested at the unit’s Una headquarters and were assisted by Congress MLA from Una Satpal Singh Raizada and party’s inter-district president Naresh Thakur.

The workers raised slogans against the officials of the Industry Management and Labour Department.

Raizada accused the government officials of exploiting the workers. The workers allege that they were not paid salaries by the liquor unit for the last six months and their arrears and bonus had also been held back.

The workers also alleged that their overtime money had not been released by the industry for many years.

Raizada alleged the liquor unit had the backing of the Labour Department. He said if the state government did not take immediate steps to resolve the issues of the workers, the protest would be intensified.

During the dharna, INTUC district president Naresh Thakur said though the Labour Department was an appropriate front to raise such issues, “but it too had been hugely controlled by the anti-worker BJP regime”.

“The department only listens to demands of industries and doesn’t cater to workers,” he said.
