The State Election Commission announced panchayat elections in the tribal areas of Lahaul-Spiti and Pangi on Tuesday. A notification in this regard has been issued bringing into force a model code of conduct in these constituencies.
Voting dates
Voting in these areas will take place on September 29 and October 1. The nomination process will be held on September 13, 14 and 15. Withdrawal of nominations should be done by September 18 and allotment of election symbols will also be done on the same day. Counting, after the elections, will be done on September 29 and October 1.
Announcement of results
The results for the posts of Panchayat Pradhan, deputy Pradhan and ward members will be declared on the day of the election while counting of votes for the panchayat samiti, and zilla parishad will be done on October 4. According to the election commission, voting will be held in 32 panchayats of Lahaul-Spiti and 19 of Pangi.
Bye-elections to be held
Bye-election will also be held for a total of 84 posts of Pradhan, Deputy Pradhan, Ward member and Panchayat Samiti in other areas of the state. In these elections, a total of 1360 employees and 680 security personnel will be on duty in 340 polling booths.
Committees overseeing operations in tribal areas
The five-year term of public representatives in the tribal areas ended on June 23. The elections in these areas could not be held on time due to the pandemic and hence the government-appointed committees to look into the affairs of these areas. Post elections public representatives will be responsible for the affairs of these areas.
