The Newz Radar
SHIMLA: Shimla, known for its serene landscapes and as the capital city, witnesses a substantial influx of tourists, particularly during the winter season. With Christmas and New Year festivities, the city is currently experiencing a surge in visitors attending the winter carnival. Over the past 10 days alone, approximately 160,000 vehicles have entered Shimla through the Shoghi barrier, averaging around 10,000 vehicles daily.
The increased flow of vehicles has raised concerns about potential traffic jams in the city. To address this, the Shimla police have implemented a one-minute traffic control plan, aiming to regulate vehicles entering the city. Additionally, CCTV cameras are being utilized to monitor traffic conditions.
Residents have noted improvements in traffic management this year, but suggestions for further enhancements persist. Deepak from Chandigarh acknowledges the reduced traffic congestion but believes that the city’s traffic system could still be refined. Local resident Ashok Gupta appreciates the one-minute traffic plan implemented by the police, contributing to better traffic control.
While traffic jams persist to some extent, there is a general consensus among locals and visitors that the administration should strengthen public transportation to encourage reduced reliance on private vehicles. As the city continues to attract tourists, the call for an efficient and sustainable traffic management system in Shimla remains.
