The Himachal Pradesh Police have registered an FIR against unknown individuals for spreading false information on social media, falsely claiming that Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu could resign.
According to a spokesperson from the Police Department, the misinformation, which quickly gained traction online, had the potential to cause harm to the state government’s image.
In a press release, the police spokesperson said the FIR was lodged at the Cyber Crime police station in Shimla and an investigation was now underway to identify the individuals responsible for the dissemination of the misleading content. The authorities maintain that strict action would be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future and to hold those accountable for trying to damage the reputation of the government through such acts.
The spokesperson warned the public against sharing unverified news on social media as it could lead to legal consequences and create unnecessary panic among citizens.
A police official asked the public to report any false information regarding state officials to prevent further spread.
