TNR Exclusive: Himachal govt cuts budget to buy life-saving injections for haemophilia patients in Chamba

The Newz Radar

CHAMBA: There are about a dozen patients of haemophilia in Chamba district, but how serious the Himachal Pradesh government is about their well-being can be gauged from the fact that the Chamba Medical College released only a grant of Rs 24 lakh against Rs 1.5 crore that was sought to purchase life-saving injections.

Through the money, the medical college has made arrangements to provide some relief to these patients of the district by purchasing 300 injections of a drug administered for blood coagulation. The seriousness of the disease can be estimated from the fact that if the injection is not given on time, the patient may die due to bleeding. The price of this one injection in the market is about Rs 6,000.

The patient has to be given this injection according to weight. At times, it may have to be given every week. This is the reason why due to expensive treatment methods, even patients from middle class families, let alone from poor background, find themselves unable to afford treatment at own level.

Dr SS Dogra, Principal of the Medical College, said that for the first time the government had provided a separate budget for this medical system and it was expected that the remaining amount of the demanded budget would also be released soon.

The Himachal government had in 2017 made all medical colleges of the state free treatment centres for haemophilia, but patients in Chamba district face problems due to paucity of funds every now and then.

Haemophilia is a rare disorder in which the blood doesn’t clot normally because body lacks enough proteins (clotting factors). If one has haemophilia, the body may bleed for a long time after an injury.

Vipin Rajput, who is always active in helping haemophilia patients in Chamba, said the Haemophilia Federation was active in the field of this disease across the country. “Sadly, due to non-cooperation, the Medical College at Chamba has been blacklisted by the Haemophilia Federation of India,” he said.
