Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile’s Statement on the 64th Anniversary of Tibetan Democracy Day

Tibetan Democracy Day

Mcleodganj: This Monday marks the 64th anniversary of Tibetan Democracy Day, a significant milestone commemorating the establishment of democracy within the Tibetan exile community.

This day celebrates the vision of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the revered spiritual and temporal leader of the Tibetan people, who initiated the democratization process after his arrival in exile in India in 1959.

Understanding the immediate and long-term needs of the Tibetan people, His Holiness granted them the gift of democracy, laying the groundwork for a democratic political system.

On September 2, 1960, under his guidance, the first Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile was established, with members taking their oath of office, making this date a historic moment for the Tibetan community in exile.

Since then, the Tibetan democracy has developed remarkably, overcoming initial resistance due to limited understanding of democratic principles. His Holiness consistently advocated for democratic values, which led to the creation of a representative government embodying the will of the Tibetan people.

The democratic system of the Tibetan community in exile is unique, combining aspects of both presidential and parliamentary systems, without the influence of political parties.

Key developments include the issuance of a democratic constitution for a future free Tibet in 1963, the adoption of the Charter of Tibetans in Exile in 1991, and the establishment of the Tibetan Supreme Justice Commission in 1992. In 2011, His Holiness devolved his political authority to elected leaders, strengthening the democratic governance structure.

While Tibetans in exile enjoy democratic rights, their compatriots in Tibet face severe repression under Chinese rule. The Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile highlights the increasing brutality of China’s policies aimed at eradicating Tibetan culture and identity. Recent incidents include the forced closure of Tibetan educational institutions and the expulsion of young monks from monasteries.

The Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile calls for intensified global advocacy against these oppressive actions and urges the Chinese government to cease its destructive policies. The Tibetan community remains committed to the preservation of their cultural and religious heritage, continuing to uphold democratic principles under the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

The 64th anniversary of Tibetan Democracy Day stands as a reminder of the importance of unity and the ongoing struggle for justice and freedom for the Tibetan people.
