CHAMBA: In a concerning development, the education system in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh has reached a state of disrepair, with several schools grappling with a severe shortage of regular teachers. Among those affected is Lohani primary school, situated under the primary education block Saloni, where for the past four months, not a single regular teacher has been on duty.
Prior to the latest staff challenge, the Lohani school had two teachers catering to the educational needs of 16 students. However, one teacher retired, while the other received a promotion and moved to another school, leaving Lohani school without any regular teaching staff.
To address this void, a temporary arrangement has been made, with a teacher from a different school being deployed to manage the school on a makeshift basis. The situation has raised concerns about the quality of education being delivered in such makeshift arrangements and the long-term impact on the students’ academic progress.
Ravi Sharma, the deputy head of Kharal panchayat, expressed his distress over the lack of regular teachers, emphasising that the education system in the affected schools was now relying on an ad hoc policy. He underscored the urgent need for the government to intervene and prioritise the appointment of regular teachers to ensure the smooth functioning of these educational institutions.
Local authorities and community members are calling on the government to address the crisis promptly and appoint regular teachers. “The absence of regular teachers not only hampers the academic growth of the students but also raises questions about the overall stability and effectiveness of the education system in Chamba district,” said Ravi.
