Samsung phone catches fire on a flight in US, forces emergency evacuation
A Samsung Galaxy A21 overheated and burst into flames inside an Alaska Airlines flight after landing at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport The incident forced passengers to be evacuated on the aircraft’s emergency slides. A Samsung spokesperson said the company is aware of the incident and “conducting a thorough investigation”.
Chat app Discord to raise over $500 million at $15 bn valuation
Discord is in talks to raise at least $500 million in a funding round that would value the video game chat platform at $15 billion. Dragoneer Investment Group is expected to lead the round and several existing investors would participate in it. The six-year-old start-up was valued at $7 billion after it raised $100 million eight months ago.
Final vote delayed for South Korea’s plan to ban Google and Apple in-app payment rules South
Korea’s parliamentary committee passed 25th August passed a landmark bill to prevent Google and Apple from charging software developers’ commissions on in-app purchases, the first of its kind in the world. The final vote by all members of the National Assembly – required to pass and activate the proposal – which was expected to be held in a plenary session on the same day, was delayed until further notice.
Xiaomi to buy self-driving tech startup Deepmotion for $77 million
The acquisition will help the company develop Level 4 self-driving technology, which allows full autonomous driving, Xiaomi’s President Wang Xiang said. Earlier, Xiaomi said it will invest $10 billion in the next 10 years to enter the electric vehicle sector.
Yahoo India shuts news operations after 20 years over foreign investment regulations
Yahoo said it has ceased publication of content and shut down content operations in India, including Yahoo News, Yahoo Cricket, Finance and Entertainment, after around 20 years. Yahoo India was impacted by “new FDI regulations that limit foreign ownership” of media companies that publish digital content, it added. However, Yahoo Account, Mail, and Search experiences won’t be affected.
