Smoke alarm activated onboard Russian module on the space station

A smoke alarm was activated in a Russian service module on the International Space Station, the Russian space agency Roscosmos said. Russian cosmonaut Oleg Novitskiy had seen and smelled smoke and French astronaut Thomas Pesquet said the smell of burnt plastic or electronics had spread from the Russian segment to the US section, media reports said.

China suspends approval for new online games in country: Report

Chinese regulators have temporarily suspended approval for all new online games in the country, the South China Morning Post reported. The decision was revealed at a meeting between Chinese authorities and industry players Tencent and NetEase. In August, China banned under-18s from playing video games for more than three hours a week to curb addiction.

Robots rented for $15/day to work at understaffed US restaurant

An understaffed restaurant in Texas, US, has been renting robots for $15/day to greet customers, take food to tables, and will even sing “Happy Birthday”. Servers accompany the robots and act as their handler through the whole experience. The restaurant said it turned to robots after it found it difficult to fill certain positions post COVID-19.

2 million satellite pics used to complete ‘1st-ever’ global coral map

Researchers have completed the “first-ever” map of the world’s tropical, shallow coral reefs using two million satellite images from across the globe. The Allen Coral Atlas gives users the ability to see detailed information about local reefs, including different types of submarine structures like sand and rocks. It also provides imagery to a depth of 15 metres into the water

Apple appoints its tech VP Kevin Lynch to lead car project: Report

Apple’s technology VP Kevin Lynch will now lead its car project after the previous leader, Doug Field, left for Ford, Bloomberg reported. Lynch joined the division earlier in the year but is now overseeing the entire unit. He had joined Apple in 2013 after having worked at Adobe for 17 years, where his last role was that of the CTO.
