India’s agonising 11-year wait for a global cricket title ended in spectacular fashion as the team, led by Rohit Sharma, defeated South Africa by seven runs in a thrilling final to secure their second T20I World Cup trophy on Saturday (June 29, 2024).
The high-stakes match at Kensington Oval in Barbados saw India post a competitive total of 176/7 in their 20 overs after captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat first. In response, South Africa was restricted to 169/8, falling short by 7 runs.
For their triumphant effort, Team India received a handsome reward of $2.45 million (approximately Rs 20.42 crore) from the International Cricket Council (ICC). As the Indian squad comprised 15 players, each player would get more than Rs 1 crore. South Africa, who narrowly missed out on their first T20 World Cup title, were awarded $1.28 million (approximately Rs 10.67 crore).
The semi-finalists, England and Afghanistan, who were knocked out by India and South Africa, respectively, each took home $787,500 (approximately Rs 6.56 crore). The final was a nail-biting affair. Heinrich Klaasen’s explosive innings of 52 off 27 balls put the Indian bowlers under immense pressure, making it seem at one point that Rohit Sharma and his team might have to settle for second place yet again in a World Cup final. However, the Indian team showed remarkable resilience, clawing their way back into the game.
Hardik Pandya, who had faced criticism from fans over the past six months, emerged as the hero by successfully defending 16 runs in the final over. His performance ensured that India clinched their first ICC trophy since 2013 and marked their maiden T20 World Cup victory in the post-IPL era.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the team on their victory and praised the efforts of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. He also acknowledged the pivotal roles played by Hardik Pandya and other team members in this historic win.
The country erupted in celebrations, with fans taking to the streets waving the Tricolour as India once again claimed the top spot in international cricket, ending an 11-year ICC title drought with a memorable win over South Africa.
