Dharamshala: The picturesque town of Dharamshala in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a significant surge in foreign tourists this year, with an impressive 100 per cent increase in arrivals during April and May compared to the same period in 2023.

Kangra Tourism Officer Vinay Dhiman said that the current tourist season had been exceptionally favourable, with an occupancy rate of 90-95 per cent in various tourism units across Dharamshala. Asked about domestic tourism trends, Dhiman noted that travellers from various Indian states, particularly Punjab, Haryana and the Delhi-NCR region, have been flocking to Himachal Pradesh.

However, he pointed out that the influx of tourists from southern states remains relatively low due to the lack of connecting flights and railway transport to the region.
Discussing the increase in foreign tourists, Dhiman highlighted a notable shift in visitor demographics. Traditionally, Israeli tourists have been the predominant foreign visitors in Dharamshala.

This year, however, there has been a substantial rise in tourists from England, America, Germany and other developed countries.

In terms of statistics, approximately 6,000 foreign tourists visited Kangra (Dharamshala) in March. This number saw a decline to around 2,500 in both April and May. Despite the drop, the overall trend remains positive, with expectations of a further increase in June. Notably, around 900 foreign tourists arrived in April and May, contributing to a total of approximately 15,000 foreign tourists visiting Kangra (Dharamshala) so far this year.

“This significant rise in foreign tourist arrivals underscores Dharamshala’s growing appeal as a global travel destination. Local tourism stakeholders are optimistic that the trend will continue, bolstered by the town’s scenic beauty, cultural attractions, and the hospitality of its tourism industry,” said Dhiman.
