KINNAUR: The strategic Chandigarh-Kinnaur National Highway-5 has been blocked due to a massive landslide near Nigulsari in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh since early morning on Friday (September 8, 2023).
According to information, a massive hill has come crashing down onto the road, leaving no trail of the national highway. Due to this, the movement of vehicles from Reckong Peo to Rampur and Shimla and vice-versa has completely stopped and long queues of vehicles have formed on either side of the landslide point.
The National Highways Authority of India has installed machinery to clear the debris and restore the road. “As soon as information about the closure of the route was received, work was started on a war-footing for its restoration. As the landslide is massive, it may take time to restore the road,” said NHAI Junior Engineer Satish Joshi.
The highway is a crucial link for ferrying Indian soldiers to forward posts on the border with China. There is a regular movement of security personnel on this road. Currently, the road is also the lifeline of the apple orchardists of Kinnaur district for ferrying their produce to apple markets in various parts of Himachal, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and other places.
